Szombat este a Chateau Nova Yellowhead hotelben egy gálaműsor keretében ünnepeltük meg a Magyar Ház fennállásának 55. évfordulóját. Az eseményen beszédet mondott Lengyel Miklós, Magyarország kanadai nagykövete, Szenthe Anna, a KMKT elnöke és Vörös Sándor, a Magyar Kultúrkör elnöke. Cserkészeink népdalösszeállítását Bartha Kristóf citerán kísérte. A gála keretén belül a Kultúrkör két egykori elnöke, Toldy Éva és Szenthe Sándor Örökös tiszteletbeli elnöki díjban részesült.
55 évvel ezelőtt a Kultúrkör életében olyan történt, ami előtte még soha: saját otthona lett az edmontoni magyarságnak. A 68 St. és 129 Ave. kereszteződésében álló, egykori kolostorépületet a Szél Károly vezette Kultúrkör megvásárolta, majd évekig dolgozott annak felújításán. Több ezer óra belefektetett energia és sokszáz önkéntes kéz járult hozzá ahhoz, hogy az épületet otthonossá tegyék a magyarság számára. 1971 óta a Magyar Ház nemcsak ünnepségek, bálok, vacsorák, táncestek színhelye, hanem találkozásoké, emlékeké, felejthetetlen, vidám pillanatoké is.
Az ünnepi gálára március 21-én került sor a Chateau Nova Yellowhead hotelben, melyet Bartha Kristóf (KCSP) vezetett le. Az állófogadás során elkészültek az est fotói a Magyar Ház óriásplakátja előtt, melyet Bartha Kristóf tervezett. Emellett megtekinthető volt az edmontoni magyarság történetét – beleértve a Magyar Kultúrkört, a Csárdás Táncegyüttest, és a Hungária labdarúgócsapatát – felölelő kiállítás, melynek egy részét Vörös Sándor és Bartha Kristóf hosszas tervezés és kutatómunka után állította össze.
Az eseményen részt vett Lengyel Miklós, Magyarország kanadai nagykövete is, aki első nyugat-kanadai látogatása során Edmontonban is tiszteletét tette. Beszédében a nagykövet úr köszönetet mondott a helyi magyarságnak a hagyományok megőrzéséért és ápolásáért. Szenthe Anna, a Kanadai Magyar Kulturális Tanács elnöke és a Magyar Diaszpóra Tanács kanadai regionális elnöke, illetve Vörös Sándor, a Magyar Kultúrkör elnöke szintén megemlékezett beszédében a magyarság sok évtizedes építő munkájáról.
Az ünnepi műsorban a Prohászka Ottokár cserkészcsapat tagjai (Kovács Nóra, Kovács Orsolya, Krassay Rózsa, Zavicsa Tímea, Zavicsa Izabella és Ferenczi Anett) egy népdalcsokrot adtak elő, melyet Bartha Kristóf citerán kísért. A gálaest keretén belül a Kultúrkör két volt elnökének munkáját Örökös tiszteletbeli elnöki tisztséggel ismerték el. Toldy Éva – aki hét éven át vezette a magyar közösséget – és Szenthe Sándor – aki 21 éven keresztül tette mindezt – is kitüntetésben részesült.
A gálavacsora előtt imát mondott nt. Gödöllei Károly, a Kálvin Magyar Református Egyház lelkésze. A vacsora alatt a Stratchona String Quartet szolgáltatta a zenét, majd az edmontoni körökben jól ismert Attiláék léptek színpadra, akik egészen éjfélig húzták a magyar nótákat – táncoscipők kopogása közepette.

On Saturday evening, we celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Hungarian House with a gala at the Chateau Nova Yellowhead Hotel. Speeches were delivered by Miklós Lengyel, Ambassador of Hungary to Canada, Anna Szenthe, President of the Canadian Hungarian Cultural Council, and Sándor Vörös, President of the Hungarian Cultural Society. A selection of Hungarian folk songs performed by our scouts was accompanied on the zither by Kristóf Bartha. During the gala, two former presidents of the Cultural Society, Éva Toldy and Sándor Szenthe, were awarded the title of Honorary Life President.
55 years ago, something unprecedented happened in the life of the Cultural Society: the Hungarian community in Edmonton gained its own home. The former monastery building located at the intersection of 68 St. and 129 Ave. was purchased by the Cultural Society under the leadership of Károly Szél, followed by years of renovation work. Thousands of hours of dedicated effort and the contributions of hundreds of volunteers helped transform the building into a welcoming home for the Hungarian community. Since 1971, the Hungarian House has been not only a venue for celebrations, balls, dinners, and dance events, but also a place of gatherings, memories, and joyful, unforgettable moments.
The anniversary gala took place on March 21 at the Chateau Nova Yellowhead Hotel and was hosted by Kristóf Bartha (KCSP). During the reception, photos of the evening were taken in front of the Hungarian House backdrop, designed by Kristóf Bartha. In addition, an exhibition showcasing the history of the Hungarian community in Edmonton – including the Hungarian Cultural Society, the Csárdás Dance Ensemble and the Hungária soccer team – was on display. Part of the exhibition was compiled by Sándor Vörös and Kristóf Bartha after extensive planning and research.
The event was also attended by Ambassador Miklós Lengyel, who visited Edmonton as part of his first official trip to Western Canada. In his speech, the Ambassador expressed his gratitude to the local Hungarian community for preserving and nurturing Hungarian traditions. Anna Szenthe, President of the Canadian Hungarian Cultural Council and Regional President of the Hungarian Diaspora Council in Canada, as well as Sándor Vörös, President of the Hungarian Cultural Society, also reflected on the many decades of work carried out by the community.
As part of the festive program, members of the Prohászka Ottokár Scout Group (Nóra Kovács, Orsolya Kovács, Rózsa Krassay, Tímea Zavicsa, Izabella Zavicsa, and Anett Ferenczi) performed Hungarian folk songs, accompanied on the zither by Kristóf Bartha. During the gala evening, the work of two former presidents of the Cultural Society was recognized with the title of Honorary Life President. Éva Toldy, who led the community for seven years, and Sándor Szenthe, who served for 21 years, both received this distinction.
Before the gala dinner, a prayer was said by Rev. Károly Gödöllei, pastor of the Calvin Hungarian Presbyterian Church. During dinner, music was provided by the Strathcona String Quartet, followed by a performance from the well-known Edmonton group Attiláék, who played Hungarian songs until midnight – amid the tapping of dancing shoes.
