Stefan Zweig Sakknovellájának szabad, 90 perces adaptációjában Márta és István az utolsó menekültvonattal próbálja elhagyni az országot. A fiatal pár mellett az egyház ereklyéi is a határ felé tartanak, melynek útját B-ből, a katolikus papból a hatalom emberei kínzással próbálják kiszedni. A szereplők történetei a vonaton egy mindent eldöntő sakkjátszma során keresztezik egymást, melyen már nemcsak a kincsek sorsa, de a szerelmesek élete is a tét.
Tóth Barnabás régóta várt adaptációja olyan váratlan fordulatokkal teli pszichothriller, amilyet a nézők magyar rendezőtől eddig még nem láthattak. Az esemény után a rendezőt dr. Varga Balázs, az ELTE filmtudományi docense, az Albertai Egyetem vendégprofesszora kérdezi. A belépés ingyenes!

We warmly invite everyone to the Canadian premiere of Barnabás Tóth’s film Mastergame (2023) on November 4 at 7pm. at the Hungarian House!
Inspired by Stefan Zweig’s The Royal Game, the 90-minute-long film follows Márta and István, a young couple trying to escape the country on the last refugee train. Alongside them travel sacred church relics bound for the border, and the authorities torture Father B., a Catholic priest, to learn their route. The characters’ fates intertwine aboard the train during a decisive chess match where not only the treasures but also the lovers’ lives hang in the balance.
Barnabás Tóth’s long-awaited adaptation is a psychological thriller full of unexpected twists – unlike anything audiences have seen from a Hungarian director before. Following the screening, dr. Balázs Varga, Associate Professor of Film Studies at ELTE and Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, will hold a discussion with the director. Admission is free!
